Complex Regional Pain Syndrome of Foot(CRPS) | Dr. Sampat Dumbre Patil

Have you or your loved one experienced severe foot and leg pain with swelling several days after an injury or surgery?

Severe distressing or burning pain several days after a foot or leg injury or surgery is categorized into Complex Regional Pain Syndrome of Foot(CRPS).
It is difficult to diagnose this condition due to its varying nature of symptoms.

Complex Regional Pain Syndrome of Foot(CRPS)

Why does CRPS occur?

Abnormal functioning in the brain and spinal cord causes intense pain signals in the leg and foot.
The initial injury may or may not be the source of this abnormal functioning.

Other symptoms in CRPS
Swelling, tenderness(pain on touching the foot and ankle), changes in skin color, texture, and temperature.
In later stages, it causes muscle weakness, joint stiffness and affects daily functions.

How is CRPS  confirmed or diagnosed?

There is no specific test to diagnose CRPS. It is confirmed with diagnostic criteria:
  • Your doctor will take a detailed history from you for all the injury details and symptoms.
  • Specific signs will be watched for
    • Changes in skin temperature
    • Changes in hair, nail growth.
    • Swelling, redness, and tenderness.
CRPS usually occurs 4-6 weeks after an injury with intense rest and activity pain that does not subside with any treatment.

What treatment options are available for CRPS?

Although difficult to treat and overcome completely, CRPS is usually brought under control by the following therapies:
  • Physiotherapy
A Physiotherapist will help you reduce pain and other symptoms through simple mobility and strengthening exercises. Functional rehabilitation is the main focus where exercises are based on improving independence in daily activities.

  • Desensitization
Explained in simple words, it means to reduce the sensitivity of the affected part. Techniques such as gently rubbing or kneading the part with different textures, weights, and use of water with different temperatures. This causes

One must always consult a physician, Orthopedic surgeon and Physiotherapist before beginning any form of therapy. The earlier that the condition is identified as CRPS, better are the chances of recovery.

How can Physiotherapy help in Diabetes? |Dr. Sampat Dumbre Patil

How can Physiotherapy help in Diabetes? |Dr. Sampat Dumbre Patil

Physiotherapy helps people to overcome disability and pain related to orthopedic, musculoskeletal, neurological and rheumatic illness.A diabetic person with aching legs can be treated with a massage which gives a relief to the feet. After the massage, the painful feet will be testified by soaking in cold water.

PREVENTION OF DIABETES:

Diabetes can be controlled by lifestyle modifications which include intensive exercise rather than pharmacological therapy. Physiotherapists can help people by planning an individualized exercise program. This exercise program helps to control the glucose level in blood and achieves optimal weight. Physiotherapy can reduce the frequency of cardiovascular events and improves the life expectancy. It also helps to improve the metabolic movements of the body in absence of weight loss. In addition to physical exercise, the use of alternate therapies such as yoga can help to achieve optimal cardiorespiratory health.

Physiotherapy And Diabetes - On World Diabetes Day

Physiotherapists can suggest specific exercises for the people with coexisting complications and caution certain movements that might be detrimental to their health. Effective counseling for physical exercise can ensure both cardio-respiratory and musculoskeletal fitness. For example, an isotonic exercise like jogging helps a person to control high blood pressure and diabetes. But a repeated foot trauma associated with jogging may cause Sensory neuropathy or Charcot’s foot.

BEYOND EXERCISE COUNSELING:

Most of the people suffering from diabetes have musculoskeletal complications like frozen shoulder, back pain or osteoarthritis. People with poorly managed type 1 diabetes have a syndrome of limited joint mobility. Diabetic amyotrophy is a type of neuropathy that has muscle wasting and weakening in the thighs. Carpal tunnel syndrome and sciatica are the other neurological conditions that occur in people suffering from diabetes. In all these conditions, physiotherapy plays a major role in returning people to their normal life. The physiotherapist uses a combination of active and passive exercises, and mechanical and electrical aids to promote musculoskeletal and neurological functions.

WIDER BENEFITS OF PHYSIOTHERAPY

Physiotherapy interventions are usually delivered on a one-to-one basis. It will provide a contemporary approach to chronic medical care. The time spent with the physiotherapist during treatment can strengthen the bonding and enhance communication between them. The need for physiotherapy services continues to grow as the number of people with diabetes continues to rise with the existing diabetes population.
